John Woo's THE KILLER Under Contract Again!

I think I would prefer to see a film made that pays homage to THE KILLER rather than a remake at this stage but I am willing to be convinced!

Yes, John Woo's classic THE KILLER is being remade and this time in stereoscopic 3D! John Woo is producing so that mitigates my initial thoughts.

If you have not seen the original, I encourage you to check it out. In fact, I recommend it. Chow Yun-Fat stars and aces his role completely. The movie spawned impressive influence over future action movies and pushed the boundaries of 'artistic action'.

Here is the official press release (emphasis is mine):
Los Angeles, 31 January 2011: Essential Entertainment has joined Lion Rock Productions in its remake of THE KILLER in 3D, currently in pre-production, which will be directed by John H. Lee (A Moment to Remember, Saying Good-bye One day) and written by Josh Campbell. Jung Woo-Sung (Reign of Assassins, The Good, The Bad, The Weird) will star in this English language re-telling of John Woo’s iconic action masterpiece, with additional cast to be announced shortly. The film will be produced by Woo (Face/Off, Mission: Impossible II) and Terence Chang under their Lion Rock Productions banner. Essential Entertainment will be handling worldwide sales.

Producer John Woo said: “While all my films are special to me, THE KILLER is truly one of my favorites. We are thrilled to reinvent it as an English-language film and know it’s in capable hands by the incredible visual style and tender emotion John H. Lee brings to all his films.”

John Fremes, President of Worldwide Distribution at Essential Entertainment said: “John Woo’s THE KILLER is one of the most influential and classic action films of all-time. The 3D version will no doubt appeal to fans of the original as well as capture a new generation of enthusiasts.”

Set in present day, an elite Asian assassin risks everything to protect a beautiful singer that he unintentionally blinded, but can only do so with the help of an LAPD detective who is trying to catch him.

THE KILLER in 3D was brought into Essential Entertainment by attorney Howard Frumes from Alexander, Nau, Lawrence, Frumes, & Labowitz, LLP.

Lion Rock Productions has also independently produced, in addition to its numerous studio films, RED CLIFF, the highest grossing film in China at the time of its release, as well as the upcoming martial arts swordplay drama REIGN OF ASSASSINS, released by The Weinstein Company.

In addition to THE KILLER in 3D, Essential Entertainment is handling the international sales on Barney’s Version, The Expatriate, A Good Old Fashioned Orgy, The Music Never Stopped, and Red Dog, which will have its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival— screening in competition as part of Generation 14plus.

Jung Woo-Sung
will have the daunting challenge of filling Yun-Fat's boots for this reshoe shoes for this reboot - hoping for the best!

Ben Walker Wins Election: Takes Titular Role In ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER

Beating out other actors for the coveted role (like Adrien Brody, James D'Arcy, Oliver Jackson-Cohen and Josh Lucas), Ben Walker has assumed the mantle of ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER.

The movie will be shot in native 3D starting this March and slated for release June 22, 2012. Timur Bekmambetov will direct the Tim Burton and Jim Lemley production for Fox.

SPOILERS: Here is a fairly detailed description of the book - Warning: Do not read if you want a pristine viewing experience!! Many elements are sure to be used in the adapted screenplay...

The epistolary-style book is written as a biography of Abraham Lincoln, based on "secret diaries" kept by the 16th President and given to the author by a vampire named Henry Sturges.

When Lincoln is eleven years old, he learns from his father Thomas Lincoln that vampires are in fact real creatures. Thomas explains to his son that a vampire killed Abraham's grandfather (also named Abraham Lincoln) in 1786. Young Abraham is also shocked to learn that his beloved mother Nancy Hanks Lincoln succumbed not to milk sickness but rather to being given a "fool's dose" of vampire blood, the result of Thomas's failure to repay a debt. Lincoln vows in his diary to kill as many vampires as he can. A year later he lures the vampire responsible for his mother's death to the family farm and manages to kill it with a homemade stake.

At the age of sixteen Lincoln gets word of a possible vampire attack along the Ohio River and investigates, but this time he is no match for the vampire and is nearly killed. He is saved at the last moment by the intervention of the vampire Henry Sturges. Henry nurses Lincoln back to health and explains some of the nature of vampirism, emphasizing that some vampires are good and others are evil. Lincoln spends the summer with Henry and trains for combat, becoming a skilled wrestler and axe-handler. For several years following, Henry sends Lincoln the names and addresses of evil vampires; Abraham dutifully tracks them down and kills them.

As a young adult Lincoln and a friend travel down the Mississippi River to New Orleans on a flatboat to sell a number of goods. Here Lincoln's life is changed forever after he witnesses a slave auction. Lincoln follows a slave buyer and his new slaves back to their plantation and discovers to his horror that the buyer is a vampire - the slaves are to be used not for labor but for food. Lincoln writes in his diary his belief that vampires will continue to exist in America as long as they can easily buy their victims in this manner - to end slavery is to end the scourge of vampires. Lincoln becomes an Abolitionist.

Lincoln returns to his home in New Salem and begins his business and political careers by day, continuing to track down the vampires in Henry's letters at night. His life is once again tinged by tragedy when his lover Ann Rutledge is attacked and murdered by her ex-fiance John McNamar, now a vampire living in New York City. With Henry's help, Lincoln catches McNamar and kills him, but he decides to give up vampire hunting and instead concentrate on his daytime pursuits. He marries Mary Todd, begins to raise a family, starts a law firm, and is elected to a term in the United States House of Representatives.

While in Washington, Lincoln meets his old friend Edgar Allan Poe, who also knows the truth about vampires. Poe tells Lincoln that the vampires are being chased out of their ancestral homes in Europe (in part because of a public outcry over the bloody atrocities of Elizabeth Báthory) and are flocking to America because of the slave trade. Poe warns that if the vampires are left unchecked they will eventually seek to enslave all Americans, white and black. Lincoln leaves Washington in 1849 and declines to seek re-election; Poe is found murdered that same year in Baltimore, the victim of a vampire attack.

In 1857 Henry summons Lincoln to New York City. Here Lincoln and fellow vampire slayer William Seward are told that the vampires in the South intend to start a civil war so that they can conquer the north and enslave everyone. Lincoln is ordered to debate Stephen A. Douglas in what become known as the Lincoln-Douglas debates. Although Lincoln loses to Douglas (an ally of the Southern vampires), he gains a great deal of publicity and respect, which allows him to capture the Republican Party nomination for president and then the office itself.

Lincoln's election triggers the secession of the southern states and the start of the American Civil War. Early battles, such as the First Battle of Bull Run go poorly for the Union troops after they are attacked by Confederate vampires. Lincoln decides that the best way to defeat the vampires is to eliminate their food source and starve them out — to that end, he announces the Emancipation Proclamation and encourages the slaves to fight back against slave owners and vampires alike. This begins to turn the tide of the war.

However, the war takes a personal toll on Lincoln. A vampire assassin sneaks onto the White House lawn and kills Willie Lincoln, the President's 11-year-old son. Henry appears at the White House and offers to turn Willie into a vampire so that he will "live" again, but Lincoln is unwilling to allow it. Enraged, he banishes Henry and all other vampires from the White House and refuses to speak to any of them ever again.

The war ends with the South's defeat. Lincoln receives reports that the vampires in the South are fleeing to Asia and South America in the wake of the slave system's collapse. Happy for the first time in many years, he attends a play at Ford's Theater, only to be assassinated by the actor and vampire John Wilkes Booth. Booth expects the vampires to rally around President Lincoln's death, but instead finds himself shunned and hiding in a Virginia barn as Union troops arrive to arrest him. Henry arrives and confronts Booth inside the burning barn; it is implied that Henry is the one who kills Booth.

Lincoln's death is mourned by the nation. His body is brought by a funeral train back to Springfield, Illinois, where Henry stands guard.

The biography concludes with Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream" speech at the Lincoln Memorial. Both Abraham Lincoln and Henry Sturges attend and Lincoln writes about spending the previous night at the White House. Henry has used his powers to turn Lincoln into a vampire, believing that "some men are just too interesting to die".

Looking forward to this one! Zombies I think would have been more appealing to me, but that's personal preference :-) More when I get it...

3D Geek Alert: Life Size HULK Now Available... For A Fair Chunk Of Green...

Wow! This is one impressive mannequin! Standing almost 8 feet tall (94 Inches), this made of fibre piece is quite intimidating. One has to consider their ceiling height before ordering!

And also your wallet. Muckle Figures of Germany has the price at about $3300 USD without considering shipping, etc. Not completely sure as of yet, but I believe there is a US distributor for these pieces, Section 9 Entertainment.

Stephan Lokotsch of Section 9
spoke to Marvel:
"I believe when choosing a design for a consumer product like this, it is best to commit to one version or another to do it justice--either film or comic--not a blend," Lokotsch said. "When tying the marketing into the movie campaign, it is even more paramount to mirror the look people are then exposed to via the film and its advertising."

"We always aim for characters in dynamic poses as opposed to statues simply standing lifelessly with their arms down," Lokotsch said. "In the case of Hulk, Studio Oxmos nailed the character pose, without which, the character would not have as much impact as it does. We oftentimes seek guidance from trailers, comics and cover shots to choose the most representative and affective pose. A crucial factor hereby is also for both Muckle and Oxmos to determine that the pose can practically be manufactured, the process of which has become sort of short-hand language, as Oxmos' Marc Klinnert knows exactly what will and will not work."

Here are the specs:
Client: Muckle Mannequins
Marvel: TM & © Marvel
Sculpture: Studio Oxmox
Figure Height: 240 cm
Base: Metal base 140 x 80 cm
Material: Fibre
Parts: Body, arms, hip with leg, leg
Packaging: 5 boxes per figure
Edition: Limited
Cost: ~$2400 Euro (~$3300 USD)

Personally I prefer the smaller and high quality Sideshow Collectibles for my collection. Then again, I don't have a 10 foot high collectibles room yet at my place! You can check out other pieces Muckle Figures have to offer on their site right here.

You can see THE HULK next in THE AVENGERS coming May 4, 2012. In 3D of course...

RIO is a 3-D animation feature from the makers of the "Ice Age" films. Set in the magnificent city of Rio de Janeiro and the lush rainforest of Brazil, the comedy-adventure centers on Blu, a rare macaw who thinks he is the last of his kind. When Blu discovers there's another - and that she's a she - he leaves the comforts of his cage in small town Minnesota and heads to Rio. But it's far from love at first sight between the domesticated and flight-challenged Blu and the fiercely independent, high-flying female, Jewel. New SPIDER-MAN Set Photos: Webslinging Action!!

The first thought through my mind was: "Why don't they sign this Spider-man stunt guy to do the stage show"! These shots look a heckuva lot of fun. I often wondered where the live action ended and the CG webslinging started in past movies. These photos help get my mind around it.

The first two on set shots for Marc Webb's SPIDER-MAN reboot are from OnLocationVacations (which is a pretty cool site btw). The final two shots are from MarieClaire. There are more shots to see on those links too!

Enjoy!

SPIDER-MAN will swing into theaters July 3, 2012.

Roger Ebert Still Insists 3D Is Inferior *AND* Why I think His Opinion, Again, Is Flawed...

I suppose it is safe to assume that Roger Ebert is not going to give up. Ok. I can accept that. He hates 3D and thinks it is inferior to 2D.

Yesterday he posted on the opinion of film editor and sound designer Walter Murch in his Chicago Sun-Times column. You can see Ebert's whole article here.
I have taken the liberty of grabbing a few snippets from his page for our discussion here:

Ebert states: I received a letter that ends, as far as I am concerned, the discussion about 3D. It doesn't work with our brains and it never will.

The notion that we are asked to pay a premium to witness an inferior and inherently brain-confusing image is outrageous. The case is closed.

This letter is from Walter Murch, seen at left, the most respected film editor and sound designer in the modern cinema. As a editor, he must be intimately expert with how an image interacts with the audience's eyes. He won an Academy Award in 1979 for his work on "Apocalypse Now," whose sound was a crucial aspect of its effect.

Then Ebert posts Murch's letter:

Hello Roger,

I read your review of "Green Hornet" and though I haven't seen the film, I agree with your comments about 3D.

The 3D image is dark, as you mentioned (about a camera stop darker) and small. Somehow the glasses "gather in" the image -- even on a huge Imax screen -- and make it seem half the scope of the same image when looked at without the glasses.

I edited one 3D film back in the 1980's -- "Captain Eo" -- and also noticed that horizontal movement will strobe much sooner in 3D than it does in 2D. This was true then, and it is still true now. It has something to do with the amount of brain power dedicated to studying the edges of things. The more conscious we are of edges, the earlier strobing kicks in.

The biggest problem with 3D, though, is the "convergence/focus" issue. A couple of the other issues -- darkness and "smallness" -- are at least theoretically solvable. But the deeper problem is that the audience must focus their eyes at the plane of the screen -- say it is 80 feet away. This is constant no matter what.

But their eyes must converge at perhaps 10 feet away, then 60 feet, then 120 feet, and so on, depending on what the illusion is. So 3D films require us to focus at one distance and converge at another. And 600 million years of evolution has never presented this problem before. All living things with eyes have always focussed and converged at the same point.

If we look at the salt shaker on the table, close to us, we focus at six feet and our eyeballs converge (tilt in) at six feet. Imagine the base of a triangle between your eyes and the apex of the triangle resting on the thing you are looking at. But then look out the window and you focus at sixty feet and converge also at sixty feet. That imaginary triangle has now "opened up" so that your lines of sight are almost -- almost -- parallel to each other.

We can do this. 3D films would not work if we couldn't. But it is like tapping your head and rubbing your stomach at the same time, difficult. So the "CPU" of our perceptual brain has to work extra hard, which is why after 20 minutes or so many people get headaches. They are doing something that 600 million years of evolution never prepared them for. This is a deep problem, which no amount of technical tweaking can fix. Nothing will fix it short of producing true "holographic" images.

Consequently, the editing of 3D films cannot be as rapid as for 2D films, because of this shifting of convergence: it takes a number of milliseconds for the brain/eye to "get" what the space of each shot is and adjust.

And lastly, the question of immersion. 3D films remind the audience that they are in a certain "perspective" relationship to the image. It is almost a Brechtian trick. Whereas if the film story has really gripped an audience they are "in" the picture in a kind of dreamlike "spaceless" space. So a good story will give you more dimensionality than you can ever cope with.

So: dark, small, stroby, headache inducing, alienating. And expensive. The question is: how long will it take people to realize and get fed up?

All best wishes,
Walter Murch

Here is my response to Ebert on his column (which is still waiting for his approval):

Roger,

Though I continue to respect your authority wrt cinema, again I must vehemently disagree with the aura surrounding this story.

Simply put, if a movie is WELL MADE in 3D, there must be time given to the audience to relax their eyes. It is not a white and black scenario as Murch seems to be hinting at here. It is very much a grey area. This is where having an experienced stereographer on set is paramount. Scenes with tight or even medium narratives should be dialed back to close to 2D. It adds nothing to a movie to see a nose sticking out or eyes sunk in a face.

I reviewed THE GREEN HORNET (here: http://marketsaw.blogspot.com/2011/01/green-hornet-advanced-review-8-stars.html) and just so you know - I did NOT fully enjoy the non-stop 3D. I think you will enjoy reading that section of the review. I was clear in that time must be given to the audience to rest. I left with a headache that lasted for 15 minutes.

If you are bombarded with fairly intense 3D for an entire 2 hours it is not a good thing. I will tell you this. James Cameron will tell you this. Several rules were broken for THE GREEN HORNET and it is a shame because it is the best conversion project to date. It could have been perfect 3D, rivaling even native 3D.

No, the case is very much open and in fact is 3D is leading the industry. 50 to 70% of box office revenue is 3D and growing (http://marketsaw.blogspot.com/2011/01/50-70-of-box-office-revenue-is-s3d-new.html). James Cameron is a well respected editor too - I believe he has a different take.

Funny CAPTAIN EO was mentioned; that of course is Francis Ford Coppola's 3D effort! He is revisiting 3D again. Scorsese's HUGO CABRET is coming. Herzog's CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS is simply amazing. I don't have to mention all the other respected filmmakers embracing 3D.

But you know all of this Roger! I applaud your fortitude, but sometimes it takes more to admit your wrong than to stay the course.

So hopefully some of my words will help diffuse the additional fear, uncertainty and doubt that is continually coming from Ebert. I respect the man and his opinions as everyone is entitled to them, but I am steadfast against him on this.

Hopefully the 24 year old blogger he has added to the roster will help him see the error in his ways. Unfortunately the first interview question thrown at him was probably: "What are your views on S3D?"

Oh well.

HELLO! **GOODBYE [UPDATED]: Keanu Reeves Says Two More 3D Matrix Movies In Dev *AND* He Is Working On A 3D Samurai Movie Right Now!!

Sounds like this is a fabrication according to the school where Reeves was supposed to have spoken and also his own team. Waiting for AICN to comment on the whole thing.

Grrrr. I wanted this to happen!

We have some particularly exciting news from Neo himself, Keanu Reeves
who was addressing a crowd at the London School Of Performing Arts university:

1. He's a third of the way through a massive training program to star in a 3D samurai movie (47 RONIN) that will be a HARD R.

2. Wachowskis are planning to create two more MATRIX movies
bringing Reeves back as Neo! They have discussed the usage of 3D for these movies with none other than James Cameron. He spoke further about how this time around the movies will live up to the name THE MATRIX and deliver never seen before technical achievements.

There is further talk about a BILL & TED sequel and a futuristic Will Smith vehicle that had it's script sold to Warners for $5m. Read more about it at AICN.

Developing more innovations like bullet time? I am ALL FOR IT! In 3D no less. THE MATRIX was a generational event movie that I compare to STAR WARS and AVATAR for its cultural importance. More of THE MATRIX? YES!!

More when I get it...

Confirmed: WRATH OF THE TITANS Will Be Shot In Native 3D *AND* With RED Epic Cameras!

We have known since the end of August that the CLASH OF THE TITANS sequel will be shot in native 3D and now we know that Jonathan Liebesman will use RED Epic cameras for the production!

Sam Worthington was quoted as saying: "Shot in 3D. Do put that in and make them f–king aware."

Many know I am a big fan of the RED cameras (Red One, Epic, Scarlet) as well as the Cameron/Pace FUSION cameras. I will be keeping everyone up to speed on what cameras are being used as they happen.

WRATH OF THE TITANS is due in theaters March 30, 2012
with shooting to start shortly. The original CLASH OF THE TITANS made $500m on a budget of $125m.

I Am Starting The Campaign For Warner's WESTWORLD Remake To Be Shot In S3D Right... NOW!

If there was one western that is dying to get remade, it is WESTWORLD. Many of you probably haven't seen it. I saw it as a very young boy pretending to be asleep in the back seat of my parent's car at the drive-in! If you haven't seen it - please do.

THR speculates on the possibility of this remake actually happening.

It's a very special movie. Yul Brenner was in it playing a rogue robotic gunslinger in a futuristic western theme resort where clients can experience what it was like back in the 1800's. It was written by none other than Michael Crichton! Westworld existed beside other theme parks as well, namely Romanworld and Medievalworld. The robots start to run amok and well, let's just say it was a fascinating movie. One that is permanently etched in my brain.

Westworld needs to be remade in stereoscopic 3D. The idea behind the theme park for adults is that you are there to escape the worries of your career and enjoy something completely different. Clients had to suspend their disbelief just as audiences have to at the theater. S3D would help do that. Shooting in stereo would bring viewers into the movie AND the theme park in such a way that when the robots turn, you really do feel the urge to get out of Dodge!

Let's get it made Warner Bros! In S3D - trust me, it'll work. Time to cash in on the TRUE GRIT box office trend with this "can't miss" opportunity.

MarketSaw's Review Of The GANDALF THE GREY Premium Format Figure From Sideshow Collectibles!

Sideshow Collectibles has hit another home run! I received this Gandalf (the Grey) Premium Format Figure from Sideshow before the holidays and was able to video my unboxing and commentary but didn't have time to start the post production of my review. I finally was able to do so this week and here it is!

Sideshow has limited this run to 1000 pieces and this limited edition will sell out so act fast if you are interested. It is in stock right now.

My review production value has increased somewhat with this effort but I am looking forward to further reviews now that I have a top of the line DSLR video setup (Panasonic GH1 - hacked "C" settings). More on those developments soon. This particular review was shot with a Flip Mino HD. Since then I have switched to the Sony Bloggie Touch for pocket HD needs.

During the unboxing of Gandalf, you are immediately struck by the craftsmanship and care in which these pieces are not only built, but packaged for delivery. It is an experience in itself to open and assemble these pieces.

The Gandalf Premium Format Figure has "true to character, handmade clothing" for THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING and in particular the scenes where Gandalf leads the fellowship through the Mines of Moria. The arms, legs and head are solid and lovingly painted.

Gandalf's staff lights up wonderfully! Personally I love Sideshow's statues that light up (illuminated LED) the best as it adds that further dramatic effect to your display shelves.

So here's my detailed unboxing and review! Description and specs follow. ENJOY!

Here is the piece's description and specs:
The Gandalf the Grey Premium Format figure is a truly stunning representation of the Istari wizard, capturing every aspect of this legendary member of the Fellowship of the Ring. Lighting the way as the Fellowship warily moves through the Mines of Moria, Gandalf's staff is raised, its crystal illuminated by an LED light-up feature. The figure's hand-tailored clothing reflect the layers and details of the wizard's intricate film costume, and each piece is individually painted and finished to exacting standards, each with its own unique quality and detail that is the trademark of a handcrafted Sideshow Collectibles product. This stunning figure is an outstanding addition to any 'The Lord of the Rings' collection, and is the ultimate representation of the most beloved wizard of all time.

As a member of the Istari, the ancient and powerful Gandalf the Grey is sent to Middle-earth to orchestrate the forces of light against the growing darkness. Gandalf is a trusted ally and provides wise counsel to the many peoples of Middle-earth. First to discover the true nature of Bilbo's Ring, Gandalf guides Bilbo's heir, Frodo Baggins, to Rivendell. There, Frodo takes up the responsibility for the Ring's destruction. Guide and mentor to Frodo in his quest, Gandalf leads the Fellowship of the Ring on the path to the fires of Mount Doom.

As the Fellowship of the Ring ventures deep within the Mines of Moria, they are confronted by one of the most powerful and evil beings in all of Middle-earth, a Balrog. Narrowly making their way across a vast chasm and near to the exit from Moria, the fellowship is overtaken by the beast of shadow and flame. Only the magic and might of Gandalf the Grey is strong enough to save Frodo and his companions. Standing firm in the path of danger, the noble wizard fends off the Balrog as the others escape certain death. The Balrog falls deep into the mines, and though he saves the fellowship, Gandalf is not able to escape the fiery whip of the Balrog. Urging Frodo and the Fellowship to carry on, Gandalf the Grey falls into the abyss.

Though his mortal body is sacrificed, Gandalf the Grey is strong in spirit, deep in wisdom, and skilled in magic. Finally! Nintendo 3DS Arrives March 27!! It'll Cost Ya $250

YES! After waiting what seems like an eternity, we will be finally getting the Nintendo 3DS on our shelves March 27! Europeans will see it locally 2 days earlier.

The unit will cost $249.99 in North America
and 250-300 Euro overseas.

Nintendo also recommends that kids younger than 7 years old should not use the unit as their eye muscles have not fully formed. I use the same precaution for any S3D experience frankly.

Here is the official press release:
The company that changed the world of video games with touch-screen gaming in 2004 and motion-controlled gaming in 2006 now pioneers the next dimensional shift. On March 27, Nintendo introduces portable entertainment in 3D – without the need for special glasses. The Nintendo 3DS™ system will be available in either Cosmo Black or Aqua Blue, and will have a suggested retail price of $249.99. Pricing outside the United States will be established by the local markets, but offer similar consumer value.

“Nintendo 3DS is a category of one – the experience simply doesn’t exist anywhere else,” said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “You have to see Nintendo 3DS to believe it. And it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before.”

Nintendo 3DS includes two screens. The bottom touch screen makes use of a telescoping stylus that is stored in the unit itself. The top screen displays 3D visuals to the naked eye. Looking at the screen is like peering through a window into a world where characters and objects have true depth. The system also has a 3D Depth Slider that lets players select the level of 3D they enjoy the most. The 3D effect can be ratcheted up to the highest level, scaled back to a more moderate setting or even turned off completely, depending on the preference of the user.

In addition to the familiar + Control Pad and button controls found on previous Nintendo hand-helds, Nintendo 3DS now also includes a Circle Pad, which provides a full 360 degrees of direction, giving it the freedom and precision needed to play games in 3D worlds. It brings the same degree of responsiveness that gamers enjoyed when Nintendo introduced an analog control stick to navigate Mario™ through Super Mario 64™ on the Nintendo 64™ system.

A built-in motion sensor and gyro sensor can react to the motion and tilt of the system, so whether players are twisting their systems side to side or moving them up and down, their motion-compatible Nintendo 3DS games respond instantly. No other system includes so many tools for game developers to create new and fun experiences for players.

Two features will allow owners to stay connected in new ways. Both deliver bonus content to owners as they move around during their daily lives, so users might open up their systems at any moment to find new surprises. For owners who choose to activate it, the StreetPass™ feature is capable of exchanging game information with other Nintendo 3DS systems as owners pass one another. Small packets of information can be exchanged using this data-transfer method, such as Mii™ character data, maps for games or high scores and custom character data for different games. The SpotPass™ feature can connect to compatible public hotspots and through a wireless broadband Internet connection at home, even if the system is in Sleep Mode. Once connected, the Nintendo 3DS system will receive new content and updates on a regular basis.

Each Nintendo 3DS system comes pre-loaded with a variety of fun games, applications and features, such as Nintendo 3DS Camera. Nintendo 3DS has three cameras. One camera points at the user, while two additional cameras point outward. These two outer cameras take photos in 3D. The fun, built-in game Face Raiders™ asks users to shoot at funny depictions of their own faces. Nintendo 3DS, when put into Sleep Mode, can act as a pedometer, while letting users earn Play Coins for the steps they take that can then be traded in for additional content in compatible games and applications. By accessing the Activity Log, users can check their steps as well as their play time. With Nintendo 3DS Sound, users can enjoy sound-manipulation tools or rock out while listening to their MP3 or AAC music files. An upgraded Internet browser will also be available via a system update.

The Mii Maker™ application gives users new tools to create Mii™ characters even more easily: Users can either import Mii characters from their Wii systems using an SD memory card or use the camera to take a picture of a person and have an automatic Mii character created. Users can even save their Mii characters to an SD card as pictures, which enables them to be used any way a digital photo would for personal use, such as a profile picture on social-networking sites.

The Nintendo eShop, through a system update, will offer access to downloadable games, including Nintendo DSiWare™ and ones specifically made for Nintendo 3DS. Also, just as the Virtual Console service on Wii makes retro games available for download, the Virtual Console games on Nintendo 3DS will be pulled from classic Game Boy™ and Game Boy Color games. Players will be able to view game videos, download demos for select games and see how other consumers rated the games. The Nintendo eShop will use a cash-based system. Users can either input credit card information in the shop or purchase a Nintendo 3DS Prepaid Card at retail locations.

Nintendo 3DS comes with six augmented-reality cards, called AR cards. When the two outer cameras are pointed at the cards, they read the cards and superimpose images and animations onto the scene. So users shouldn’t be surprised if they see a dragon popping out of their kitchen tables. Developers can also use this technology to add creative new experiences to their games.

Built-in parental controls can be used to limit Internet access or some of the wireless functions. By using a PIN code, parents also can turn off the 3D function altogether, or limit the ratings of the games that their kids can play.

Fans of online play will be happy to learn that the friend codes for Nintendo 3DS are specific to each Nintendo 3DS system, not each game. Once friends trade hardware codes, at any time they can check their friends list to see which of their friends are online and what they are playing.

Nintendo 3DS can also play Nintendo DS game cards with their original 2D visuals. The system also includes a slot for an SD memory card. To help users get started, every system comes with a 2GB SD memory card (though owners can provide whatever size they like). Using a service that will be provided after the hardware’s launch, Nintendo DSi™ and Nintendo DSi XL™ owners will be able to transfer games downloaded from the Nintendo DSi Shop onto their new Nintendo 3DS systems.

During the launch window (between the March 27 launch date and the E3 Expo in early June) more than 30 games will be available to Nintendo 3DS owners. These include Nintendo-created games like Pilotwings Resort™, which has players soaring acrobatically over iconic Wuhu Island; nintendogs™ + cats, a new version of the Nintendo DS classic with a feline enhancement; and Steel Diver™, a side-scrolling submarine adventure that gives the illusion that the player is peering into an aquarium. Other Nintendo 3DS games in the works include The Legend of Zelda™: Ocarina of Time™ 3D, Star Fox 64™ 3D, Kid Icarus™: Uprising and new installments in the Mario Kart™, Animal Crossing™ and Paper Mario™ series.

Nintendo 3DS also enjoys some of the strongest third-party support of any system launch. A partial list of titles coming soon to Nintendo 3DS includes Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked from Atlus; Super Street Fighter® IV 3D Edition and Resident Evil®: The Mercenaries 3D from Capcom; Madden NFL Football from EA SPORTS; The Sims™ 3 from Electronic Arts; Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D from Konami; LEGO® Star Wars® III: The Clone Wars™ from LucasArts™; Ridge Racer® 3D and Dual Pen Sports™ from Namco Bandai Games America Inc.; Super Monkey Ball™ 3D, Thor™: God of Thunder and CRUSH™ 3D from SEGA; BUST-A-MOVE™ UNIVERSE from Square Enix, Inc.; Samurai Warriors® Chronicles and Dead or Alive® Dimensions from Tecmo Koei America Corp.; and Asphalt™ 3D, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon® Shadow Wars, Combat of Giants™: Dinosaurs 3D, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell® 3D, Rayman® 3D and Rabbids® Travel in Time from Ubisoft.

First Look At SPIDER-MAN In Action! And A Daily Bugle Van!

**SAME DAY UPDATE - Video Clip Below!!

SPIDER-MAN fans take note!
Marc Webb's comic book adaptation and reboot is now shooting in Los Angeles (Grand Ave) and OnLocationVacations got a glimpse of the webhead running in make shift New York streets.

Not a very clear image but personally I am relieved the suit's colors are not as dark as previously shown in the first official Andrew Garfield shot.

The image of the Daily Bugle (the newspaper that Peter Parker is a freelance photographer with) van is tastefully done! Looks very authentic. However, if you go to www.thedailybugle.com you are redirected to a site called WizardWorld LOL.

Stay tuned for more developments for Sony's SPIDER-MAN!!

New Clip And Photo For DRIVE ANGRY 3D! *NSFW*

I think we are all going to enjoy Nic Cage in this movie guys! Check out the new photo and clip from DRIVE ANGRY 3D.

The photo has Amber Heard smiling at a cut up Cage.

My friend Patrick Lussier directs this thriller and I am anxiously awaiting its arrival in theaters. The Lussier / Todd Farmer creative team is one of the best in the business!

Here's the storyline:
In the newest 3D action-adventure from the director of MY BLOODY VALENTINE, DRIVE ANGRY stars Nicolas Cage as Milton, a hardened felon who has broken out of hell for one last chance at redemption. Intent on stopping a vicious cult who murdered his daughter, he has three days to stop them before they sacrifice her baby beneath a full moon. He’s joined by Piper (Amber Heard) – a young, sexy waitress who liberates her ex-boyfriend’s cherry-red muscle car in order to help Milton. Now, the two of them are hot on the trail of the deadly leader of the cult, Jonah King (Billy Burke), who believes it is his destiny to use the baby to unleash hell on earth. But the bloodthirsty cult is the least of Milton’s problems. The police are after him too. And worse, an enigmatic killer known only as “The Accountant” – who has been sent by the Devil to retrieve Milton and deliver him back to hell. With wicked cunning and hypnotic savagery, the Accountant will relentlessly pursue Milton at high speed across the country until his mission is accomplished. Fueled by high octane and pure rage, Milton must use his anger to go beyond all human limits to avenge his daughter’s murder, before his last chance at redemption is revoked.

The clip has a fully clothed Milton (Cage) having sex with a fully naked woman while simultaneously drinking whiskey, smoking a cigar and shooting bad guys! Perfectly reasonable. Cage says he "...never disrobes before a gunfight".

So what do you think? IMO this thing is going to look great and give us some solid entertainment. Stay tuned for more...

THE GREEN HORNET: Advanced Review - 8 Stars

There are no spoilers in this review, but you are open to discuss anything you wish in the comments section.

Click on the images to enlarge.

One sentence to sum this review up: THE GREEN HORNET is the best 3D conversion I have ever seen. It rivals and is the equal of native 3D in many scenes!

This movie sets new ground for 2D to 3D conversions. The stereo in this movie is, at times, PERFECT. I do not say that lightly as you know. Congratulations to all involved - Sony (Grant Anderson / Rob Engle), Legend 3D (Barry Sandrew), Stereo D, Venture 3D and Sassoon Film Design. It is a massive achievement and sets the bar so much closer to native 3D.

Let's talk about the few negative issues first and get them out of the way. As a general comment, the 3D is over used. Unfortunately there are few if any breaks in the constant barrage of stereo viewing for your eyes to rest and therefore at the end of the movie you can expect a headache. Minor ache of course; mine lasted about 15 minutes, but still it was there. Would it stop me from seeing it again? No way! I am going again ASAP. The moments that TGH captures that are perfectly done far outweigh tired eyes.

Yes, the 3D was over used, but scene by scene it is spectacular. Some scenes though were needlessly amped up with stereo conversion (yes, that is Jim Dorey saying that!) that in my opinion could have been used to rest the audience's eyes. Scenes like when the District Attorney is in Britt Reid's office and you can literally see the DA's nose in 3D - sticking out at you. It adds nothing to the story, does not draw you into the scene and in fact dials you out as it is so obvious. The DA is standing too far back to be able to see his nose like that even if you were really in the room with him. It was exaggerated and unnatural to me. It makes you think about the 3D and not the dialogue. That's not good. I even took my glasses off later in the scene to see the image separation and of course there it was.

Another scene was more about communication between the director, cinematographer and the on location 3D expertise. When Britt and Kato first sit in Black Beauty (their pimped out crime fighting car - or is it crime committing car!) there is an overly generous dolly movement from left to right that is far too fast for the stereo conversion (and it would be in native 3D as well imo). Too much eye strain again to enjoy that moment and distracting from the dialogue. In 2D it would have been fine, but remember this movie has full time 3D so it was a strain when it could have been a more restful moment to enjoy.

The acting could have been much better in my mind, but the comedic relief moments were superb as one would expect in a Seth Rogen project. It was a pleasure to see Christoph Waltz in the villain role again - this time much less serious than with INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS. Waltz saved this movie's acting score from being much lower in my review. And I am simply not a Cameron Diaz fan anymore. Did not enjoy her performance whatsoever.

Let's break down the aspects of my review:

Stereoscopic 3D (9 stars):
Again, perfect 3D at times. Gorgeous to watch, yet for those few times where the 3D was overly done and the overall over use of stereo brought down the score for me.

Story (8 stars):
I immediately thought to myself at the end of the movie that the story could have so much more about how these characters have changed (more on that below) but there was so little development involved. I did enjoy the angle in which Rogen explained how they were going to be different from other super heroes and act like a criminal to gain their trust (again no spoiler here).

Acting (7 stars):
Could have been so much better! I can see Rogen's enthusiasm for the role come through in his acting but I still don't think he was perfect for the role of TGH. Jay Chou was bang on though. Loved him. Again Cameron Diaz did NOT belong and Waltz was a joy to behold and carried much of the movie.

Character Development (6.5 stars):
The writers missed the mark on this one. I saw few changes in Britt Reid and only one resonated with me at all (I will talk about them in the comments - where spoilers are allowed) so I was disappointed. I got nothing from Diaz and Chou for development. Waltz's evolution was ok.

Suspension of Disbelief (7 stars):
As I said, the 3D at times was distracting and actually pulls you OUT of the movie a bit. I didn't enjoy that. However, other scenes brought you sublimely INTO the movie! Confusing I know, but there it is. I heartily enjoyed the movie though and was able to suspend my disbelief most of the time.

Directing (8.5 stars):
Michel Gondry did an amazing job with this project! He turned it into his own. Loved the pacing and how well everything held together, save those few stereo moments. More character development and story would have been prudent.

Sound / Score (8 stars):
TGH does not have the caliber of score as say TRON: LEGACY, but it is a good score. It suits the genre and action so go with it! :-)

Cinematography (9 stars):
One of the clear strengths of TGH! Perfect at times. Really draws you in. More attention has to be paid to the mash up between the camera work and stereo conversion but overall was superbly done.

Special Effects / Stunts (8.5 stars):
Another strength of the production. You can tell that a lot of money was spent on this production ($100m+, not including marketing). Nothing cheap about this movie. It is truly something to see for yourself - Black Beauty alone is worth the price of admission :-)

The few and small complaints I have are few and far between. This movie's 3D was superb and non-stop. I heard the audience's react to everything! I pay attention to those things. Even a simple static shot (no dolly movement which is often used to accentuate 3D) of the exterior of the Reid estate looked simply and utterly GORGEOUS. A couple behind me gasped at the clarity of it. It was shocking. Like you were really there. A perfect shot and conversion. Scenes like this rival native 3D - I defy you to tell the difference in that particular shot. This is a first for me guys. Conversion can be that good.

Then there was the mash up between the stereo work and the cinematography and it was amazing too. One particular shot again had the Reid estate but this time with a lateral movement and as the frame swept by the home, it transformed into the coffin of Britt's father (no spoiler as this is revealed in the trailer). It was an amazing and artistic effect, even with the obvious differences in those object sizes. Nicely done. This was a case of the 3D truly bringing out the creativeness of that scene. Loved it.

Some have complained in the past that you are not getting your money's worth with some 3D movies, that the stereo is hardly noticeable - well with TGH, you walk out of the theater knowing that you just saw spectacular 3D. No doubt about it. It is an experience to be had. Sony has a winner here and not only in the theater!

THE GREEN HORNET will excel in 3D home theaters too. It is that good. I am kinda curious how native 3D pundits (I am one!) will react to this movie. Personally I think that if the correct amount of attention is paid, and the right amount of money is paid, we are getting very close to 3D conversions rivaling native 3D.

THE GREEN HORNET is, in its own way, the poster child of stereo conversion. The first of hopefully many more 'rising bars' for conversion.

Special thanks to Empire Theatres for the screening.

Alien Prequel Pre Pro Spawns Entire New Universe! Ridley Scott To Proceed With PROMETHEUS!!!

Ok there's a lot of alliteration in that title, but why not have a little fun with this? After all, Ridley Scott and Damon Lindelof have just created an entirely new mythology and universe to play in for us!

PROMETHEUS
is the title of the new science fiction thriller Scott has up his sleeve
and it all evolved from his working with Lindelof to flesh out the ALIEN PREQUEL.

Apparently there are some elements inherited from ALIEN but we can expect to be immersed into a brand new place. Exciting or what?

Fox has announced that Noomi Rapace (THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO) will star as "Elizabeth Shaw" and Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron are interested in yet another major female role ("Vickers")!

Says Scott: "While Alien was indeed the jumping off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place. The keen fan will recognize strands of Alien’s DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative. I couldn’t be more pleased to have found the singular tale I’d been searching for, and finally return to this genre that’s so close to my heart."

Added Lindelof:
"In a world flooded with prequels, sequels and reboots, I was incredibly struck by just how original Ridley’s vision was for this movie. It’s daring, visceral and hopefully, the last thing anyone expects."

If it was even possible, I am even more amped about this new direction! I am dying to see what sort of universe Scott could take us to - his last Sci-Fi was BLADE RUNNER. All those ideas in his head for so long, mixed with the creativeness of Lindelof... well let's just say anticipation is high.

Movie is set for release on March 9, 2012.

Must Watch: Trailer For Werner Herzog's CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS

Finally the trailer emerges for Werner Herzog's CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS stereoscopic 3D documentary! Herzog is a world renowned filmmaker who is a favorite of many critics including Roger Ebert.

The titular cave is none other than France's Chauvet-Pont-d'Arc. Here is what the Toronto International Film Festival had to say about documentary (via /Film):

Werner Herzog is a wizard at conjuring unforgettable visions. Now he brings us the earliest known visions of mankind: the Chauvet-Pont-d’Arc cave art of southern France, created more than thirty thousand years ago. By comparison, the famous cave art of Lascaux is roughly half as old. Since Chauvet’s discovery in 1994, access has been extremely restricted due to concerns that overexposure, even to human breath, could damage the priceless drawings. Only a small number of researchers have ever seen the art in person.

Herzog gained extraordinary permission to film the caves using lights that emit no heat.
But Herzog being Herzog, this is no simple act of documentation. He initially resisted shooting in 3D, then embraced the process, and now it’s hard to imagine the film any other way. The 3D format proves essential in communicating the contoured surfaces on which the charcoal figures are drawn. Beyond the walls, Herzog uses 3D to render the cave’s stalagmites like a crystal cathedral and to capture stunning aerial shots of the nearby Pont-d’Arc natural bridge. His probing questions for the cave specialists also plunge deep; for instance: “What constitutes humanness?”

Enjoy!!

SO looking forward to this one!!

MUST SEE! First Looks At SPIDER-MAN And CAPTAIN AMERICA!!

WOW. Quite a bit to digest all at once, but here we have two first looks at major Marvel movie super heroes coming out!!

First up is the long anticipated SPIDER-MAN costume as worn by Andrew Garfield. It looks like a really fine leather texture of some sort of exotic creature. Lizard? As in The Lizard? ;-)

I like the suit. It is different enough to reboot the idea in my mind, yet keeps the aura about it. Keep in mind we don't know if the suit has been through some sort of tribulation prior to this photo - look at Garfield's face! A slash or two on his cheek.

Take note of the two discs attached to his wrists - seems to me to be the webslingers? It looks like he developed these himself (like the classic tales) as opposed to the Sam Raimi biologically formed webs. I am far in favor of Peter Parker inventing them - I was raised watching the original cartoons and it worked then. It'll work now.

For a super high resolution image of the suit check out this link (courtesy of Collider).

SPIDER-MAN opens July 3, 2012.

Next up is the first look at the fully costumed Chris Evans as Captain America!

This shot is courtesy of EntertainmentWeekly. From the site: "...The hero’s main uniform was designed to resemble a tricked-out airman’s jumpsuit, the “A” on the helmet and star on the chest modest in size, the colors muted. It took Evans about 25 minutes to suit up. “He likes to do it all by himself,” explained costume designer Anna Sheppard. “I think it helps him feel like a super hero.”

The HYDRA soliders behind him certainly look menacing! Kind of a cross between WAR MACHINE and SNAKE EYES :-)

I am really enjoying that the suit is believable for the era (cloth / leather mainly) and really has that WWII vibe going. Should be a spectacular movie!!

Captain America opens July 22.
