MarketSaw Exclusive Confirmed: STAR WARS 7, 8 And 9 Tabled. 3D Announcement Coming... DISNEY HAS BOUGHT LUCASFILM!!

Just as we said all along. STAR WARS 7, 8 and 9 are definitely coming starting in 2015 and then every 2 or 3 years. Not only that - and mark my words - they will be 3D movies too. We also said that Lucas would NOT be directing them. Boy, did we get some flack for passing along that story to the masses (almost as much as when we broke the exclusive that Peter Jackson's legal issues with new Line have been settled, he will be directing not just 1, but 3 Hobbit movies and that they will be shot in native 3D), but in the end we were right on both stories.

MarketSaw also had the story that the existing STAR WARS library would be converted as well.

$4 billion dollars later and Disney owns Lucasfilm, complete with STAR WARS 7, 8 and 9 in development already. Nice job! Add in Pixar and Marvel with Disney's already burgeoning resources and wow, what a modern media company!

Movie Review: SILENT HILL: REVELATION - 7 Stars

I just saw SILENT HILL: REVELATION last night and I have mixed thoughts about it. If you are a fan of horror, the video game and heck, movies with a good story and characters than you probably won't be jumping for joy at the end of it.

However, I will say that the 3D looked amazing. The cinematography, 3ality Technica (3D camera rigs & expertise) and the visual effects saved whats left of the movie and actually salvaged a 7 out of 10 score from me. Without them we're probably looking at a 4 or 5 star movie.

Why? Where to begin. How about at the top - directing. Michael J. Bassett (SOLOMON KANE) just didn't get the job done here. What irked me most was when you have an actor of the caliber of Sean Bean and you have scenes where he does look all that good at all, you're in trouble. Bassett couldn't have had enough takes for these scenes or just couldn't edit it effectively.

Watch: New Red Band Trailer For HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS

You know what? This movie is growing on me. I was a bit worried after the first trailer - it didn't seem like the suspension of disbelief would be there. Now it's looking more and more like humans vs. zombies (a very GOOD thing), only replace the zombies with witches. Very bloody. Amazing visual effects. And throw in 3D, Jeremy Renner and Famke Janssen and voila!

I haven't heard much about the 3D as of yet, but my eyes are on it and I'll have more soon.

HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS opens on January 11, 2013. In the meanwhile feast your bloody eyes on this:

First Gollum, Now The Trolls Want To Eat Bilbo! Watch The New TV Spot For THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY!!

Check out this TV Spot for THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY featuring Bilbo encountering some trolls - hungry, talking trolls to be precise.

I love that Bilbo seems to have a sense of humor even when the situation is grim. Those trolls are not exactly civilized - although they do speak English.

Combine this TV Spot with the trolls wanting to eat him, and Gollum from the trailer stating "If Baggins loses, we eats it whole", one starts to imagine a very succulent Hobbit this time around. Or perhaps Bilbo is carrying around some rather enticing cooking spices in his backpack which would naturally led any conversation to eating... ? :-)

Here's the movie's storyline:
THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY follows title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers. Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain, first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever… Gollum. Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities… A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

First Hobbit TV-Spot Hits

"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit."

So begins this new TV Spot. Tim here with a bit of exciting Hobbit news... like there isn't something new every day. That's the point we've finally reached for the marketing on the first film. Expect a lot more to come in the following days. However, that doesn't make any of us less excited. It does however bring to light the fact that if you want to stay fresh then you had better start skipping posts like this.

I really like this TV-Spot because it focuses on Bilbo's lack of experience in adventures. There's plenty of action shots with a few clever lines delivered quickly and on the mark. There's a few new shots, but a lot of the quick action shots are from the trailer released a month ago. Mainly the dialogue is fresh to the ears.

James Cameron Taps THE INFORMATIONIST As His First Post-AVATAR Directing Gig

Interesting. James Cameron and Jon Landau have put their money on a novel from last year entitled THE INFORMATIONIST are are teeing it up for #3 on the production runway. The fourth AVATAR along with BATTLE ANGEL may have just been back-burnered with this announcement. My first inclination on this news is posturing. I think Lightstorm may be posturing their next project after the AVATARs and are even dangling the end of AVATAR at 3 to Fox. This type of thing happens ALL the time so it wouldn't surprise me if my first thought was right.

That said, the official PR says quite clearly that "The Informationist will be a project for Cameron after he completes work on the second and third AVATAR films..." so do with that as you will. I'll jingle some bells and talk to some of my "people close to the situation".

Here's the official press release:

LOS ANGELES, (October 23, 2012) – Lightstorm Entertainment has acquired motion picture rights to the acclaimed 2011 novel The Informationist by Taylor Stevens, as vehicle for James Cameron to direct for 20th Century Fox Film. The Informationist will be a project for Cameron after he completes work on the second and third “Avatar” films, which are currently in pre-production.

Published in October 2011, Stevens’ tale centers on Vanessa “Michael” Munroe, an information specialist, whose work is in-demand by corporations, heads of state, private clients, and anyone else who can pay for her unique brand of expertise. When a Texas oil billionaire hires her to find his daughter who vanished in Africa four years ago. Munroe finds herself back in the lands of her childhood. Betrayed, cut off from civilization, and left for dead, she must come face-to-face with the past that she’s tried for so long to forget.

Cameron will produce with Lightstorm partner, Jon Landau. The producers expect to hire a writer to adapt the novel shortly.

Jim Cameron stated: “Taylor Stevens’ Vanessa Michael Munroe is an intriguing and compelling heroine with an agile mind and a thirst for adventure. Equally fascinating for me is her emotional life and her unexpected love story. I’m looking forwarding to bringing Vanessa and her world to the big screen.”

Added Landau: “This was an opportunity to continue our relationship with Fox and Jim Gianopulos beyond the ‘Avatar’ films. We were drawn to this book because of the terrific, compelling narrative and the character, who typifies the strong female protagonists that have inhabited Jim’s work – in this case Vanessa Munroe is essentially a mix of Lisbeth Salander and Jason Bourne.”

A second “Vanessa Michael Munroe” novel, The Innocent, was published earlier this year.

Author Taylor Stevens has a background every bit as intriguing as her heroine’s. Born in New York State, and into the Children of God, an apocalyptic religious cult spun from the Jesus Movement of the ’60s, Stevens was raised in communes across the globe. Separated from her family at age twelve and denied an education beyond sixth grade, she lived on three continents and in a dozen countries before reaching fourteen. In place of schooling, the majority of her adolescence was spent begging on city streets at the behest of cult leaders, or as a worker bee child, caring for the many younger commune children, washing laundry and cooking meals for hundreds at a time. In her twenties, Stevens broke free in order to follow hope and a vague idea of what possibilities lay beyond. She now lives in Texas, and juggles full-time writing with full-time motherhood.

Sounds extremely inviting to me. I'll have to read the book as I hadn't heard of it until just now. It certainly sounds like something in Cameron's wheelhouse and I love that it has franchise potential written all over it. AND, of course, that it's going to be shot in native 3D on Cameron | Pace equipment!!

And if you didn't read the last paragraph of the press release - please do so. The author's own life sounds like a movie in the making!

MARVEL UPDATE: ANT-MAN Starts Shooting In January * A New IRON MAN 3 Poster * And Our First Look At Ben Kingsley As The Mandarin!!

Artwork: Gerald Parel
Wallopin' websnappers! Marvel has been busy. And they intend on staying busy! Here's out latest out of the Marvel camp:

ANT-MAN starts shooting in London in January says The Examiner: ANT-MAN centers on Biophysicist Dr. Henry "Hank" Pym, who becomes a superhero after discovering a chemical substance that allows him to change his size. Armed with a helmet and suit that could control ants, Pym would shrink down to the size of an insect to become the mystery-solving Ant-Man. Scott Lang became Pym's successor after stealing Ant-Man suit to save his daughter Cassie from a heart condition. At one point the film adaptation was said to involve both Pym and Lang, however this is to be seen after the film comes out in theaters.

Three-time British Academy of Film and Television Arts BAFTA Award nominated English filmmaker Edgar Wright will direct "Ant-Man" from an adapted screenplay written by himself and BAFTA Award nominee Joe Cornish. Wright has been working on the script for over 6 years, with a third draft given to Marvel in June, 2011. The studio officially presented the character Ant Man with an entertaining and riveting test video at Comic-Con 2012. Ant Man had very unique abilities where he transforms instantly from full size to tiny size and and vice versa. He is also portrayed as a trained operative.

Interested in being cast as an actor or background performer in Marvel's ANT-MAN? Check out this site for all the particulars.

Here's a very cool poster for IRON MAN 3 featuring Tony Stark's Iron Man Suit Armory along with our very first (front-on) look at Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin.

Here's what producer Kevin Feige had to say about the villain:
"It’s less about his specific ethnicity than the symbolism of various cultures and iconography that he perverts for his own end."

Don't forget about the release of the first full trailer for IRON MAN 3 tomorrow!!

Here's the storyline for the movie:
Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Amped yet or what? The Mandarin is the leader of The Ten Rings so with this confrontation we should see some spectacular stuff. It should round out the trilogy. Can't wait!

Lytro Cameras Getting 3D Parallax Software Update

Tim here, by the end of the year that cool Lytro camera that allows you to choose focus after you take the photo will be adding a software update by the end of the year that allows you to also choose 3D parallax. When the Lytro camera was first announced one of the early ideas was to use this technology for 3D image capture. Since the cameras record light rays in terms of the direction, color, and intensity of their travel, it's entirely possible to use that information to construct a 3D scene. At first however the technology was limited to choosing focus.

The below video is from the Engadget who went to the Lytro launch in Hong Kong, where the company previewed those parallax effects coming soon. The update allows users to pan around the scene slightly, and the subject adjusts accordingly. It's pretty cool.

A Lytro rep (in the video) said the new feature would be added by the end of the year, and would be pushed out via software update. Also, since the raw data needed for the parallax effect is already present in all pictures, it will work on photos taken before the update is launched.

This is definitely going to be a must have this holiday season. Lytro also mentioned to be working on support for 3D monitors and TVs. Drop hints to loved ones and look for this nifty stocking stuffer.

American Cinematographer Manual 10th Edition to Include 3D

American Cinematographer Manual 9th Edition
Tim here, I recently got an e-mail from American Cinematographer with the subject line of 10th Edition of the American Cinematographer Manual. It was an e-mail meant for advertisers since it started "Dear Advertisers," but what caught my eye and might interest you came later in the body of the e-mail:

"Completely reimagined to reflect the sweeping technological changes that our industry has experienced, this edition of the Manual is vibrant and essential reading, as well as an invaluable field resource, covering subjects such as:

  • A comprehensive breakdown of digital technology terminology
  • The explosion of prosumer cameras in professional use
  • Previsualization
  • 3-D
  • LED lighting fixtures
  • How to use the Academy Color Encoding Specification (ACES)
  • An entirely new section on digital camera prep, and more!

  • The Manual will be available in a limited run of 2,500 hardbound copies and in an estimated run of 25,000 print-on-demand softbound copies and ebook formats for the iPad and Kindle."

Sure enough the inclusion of 3D in the manual was bound to happen. I bought the 9th Edition while a junior in college back in 2008, and have since been anticipating the inclusion of stereography.

If you're an advertiser looking to advertise your 3D product then the basic rates for the 10th edition are as follows: Full page 4/c: $3,700. Half page 4/c: $2,200. Please download rate card and specs PDF file for more details and contact information.

Make your reservations by November 7, 2012. Artwork deadline is November 21, 2012.

The 10th edition of the AC Manual is a must for advertisers looking to reach the broadest spectrum of the industry, from the established professional to the emerging prosumer. It is the ONE resource the working professional will refer to again and again.

It's JUSTICE LEAGUE Vs THE AVENGERS 2!! Huge Faceoff In '15!!!

Summer releases? Could be! Warner Bros. is planning on unleashing their dark and mature JUSTICE LEAGUE in 2015 which just so happens to be Marvel's planned THE AVENGERS 2 release year.

Think this is a minor deal? Think again. THE AVENGERS made $1.5 BILLION at the bank thus far and are now cashing in on disc sales heading into Black Friday territory and Christmas. Christopher Nolan is producing Zack Snyder's MAN OF STEEL as well as relishing in the success of this summer's THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. Think there isn't any bad taste in Joss Whedon's mouth after Pfister ridiculous comments recently?

So why isn't Nolan taking part in this battle of cinematic proportions? Perhaps it's because Warner Bros. really needs JUSTICE LEAGUE to be in 3D and the Nolan/Pfister combo can't quite bite into it. Yet. I can't imagine WB allowing JUSTICE LEAGUE to suffer from a 2D only release while THE AVENGERS 2 rakes in another one and a half billion dollars.

So who will WB bring in to helm the awesome emsemble? Not Ben Affleck apparently. So who? Regardless, 2015 looks to be a stellar year.

*Sigh* Wally Pfister Calls THE AVENGERS Appalling And Illogical

Surprise, surprise. Wally Pfister, the outspoken anti-3D cinematographer for Christopher Nolan has well, spoken out once again. Embarrassingly so in my books. I was trying to keep Pfister out of my editorials because it's the professional thing to do. He's anti-3D. So what? While he's a dying breed he is entitled to his opinion after all. I truly believe that. However...

Pfister told the Sarasota Herald Tribune in response to their question "What's most important when shooting a movie?":

"What’s really important is storytelling. None of it matters if it doesn’t support the story. I thought The Avengers was an appalling film. They’d shoot from some odd angle and I’d think, why is the camera there? Oh, I see, because they spent half a million on the set and they have to show it off. It took me completely out of the movie. I was driven bonkers by that illogical form of storytelling."

It is my personal belief (shared by many others) that Pfister is way outside the bounds of professionalism by speaking out like this. Sure his THE DARK KNIGHT RISES work behind the camera is great, but petty words like this only cause people to imagine that he is deeply jealous of THE AVENGERS box office success and that the world has lovingly embraced 3D. AVATAR is number one. TITANIC (now with a 3D re-release) is number 2. THE AVENGERS is number 3. HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2 is number 4. TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON is number 5. All 3D. It's fact.

Dare I say THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY surpasses Jackson's other LOTR works? Moves into top 5 all time? Potentially. And yes, another 3D movie.

But it's not just Pfister's stance on 3D that's upsetting. He is bad-mouthing another learned cinematographer in Seamus McGarvey (and director Joss Whedon as well). McGarvey's list of achievements is amazing. Here's his background as taken from Wikipedia:

[McGarvey] is an Irish cinematographer who began his career as a still photographer before attending film school at the University of Westminster in London. Upon graduating in 1988 he began shooting short films and documentaries, including Skin, which was nominated for a Royal Television Society Cinematography Award, and Atlantic, directed by Sam Taylor-Wood, nominated for the 1998 Turner Prize. He also photographed and directed over 100 music videos, for such artists as U2, The Rolling Stones, PJ Harvey, Robbie Williams, Sir Paul McCartney, Dusty Springfield and Coldplay. In 1998, the British Society of Cinematographers invited McGarvey to join. In 2004 he was awarded the Royal Photographic Society's prestigious Lumiere medal for contributions to the art of cinematography. His credits as a cinematographer include Oliver Stone’s World Trade Center, starring Nicolas Cage, The Hours, directed by Stephen Daldry, starring Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore, for which he earned the Evening Standard British Film Award for Best Technical/Artistic Achievement; the action-adventure film Sahara, starring Matthew McConaughey and Penélope Cruz, for which he won the Irish Film and Television Award for Best Cinematography; Along Came Polly, starring Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston; High Fidelity, directed by Stephen Frears, starring John Cusack; Wit, starring Emma Thompson, directed by Mike Nichols; Enigma, directed by Michael Apted; The War Zone; Butterfly Kiss; The Winter Guest; The Actors; A Map of the World; Charlotte's Web...

Atonement, for which he has received an Academy Award nomination (2008), a BAFTA nomination (2008) and the Technical Achievement award in the Evening Standard British Film Awards for 2007 and won the 2008 Irish Film and Television Award for Best Cinematography; A 2007 television advert for Chanel's Coco Mademoiselle campaign; and The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency directed by Anthony Minghella. In 2008 he shot The Soloist for director Joe Wright in Los Angeles. He shot "Nowhere Boy" for director Sam Taylor-Wood and reunited with director Joe Wright for the short film Cut. He shot the acclaimed Lynne Ramsay's We Need to Talk About Kevin, starring Tilda Swinton, in New York and Connecticut for which he won the 2012 Irish Film and Television Award for Best Cinematography. He shot The Avengers for director Joss Whedon which is the third biggest grossing movie of all time. He recently shot Anna Karenina for Joe Wright.

...And Pfister thinks McGarvey's highest grossing work is appalling and illogical. Right. Personally I think Pfister should take a long dark stare into a mirror before saying things like this - then again, that mirror may remind him of 3D camera rigs.

All this flying in the face of die-hard Marvel fans and the millions upon millions who paid to see THE AVENGERS in the theater. We all loved an appalling movie it seems. Illogical. Think about Marvel and Disney who have to put up with his comments just as their AVENGERS discs have gone on sale in advance of the upcoming holidays. Warner Bros. should step in here and settle this man down. Poor taste, Mr. Pfister. Very poor taste.

Zemeckis Returning To 3D - MAJOR MATT MASON Has Greenlight With Tom Hanks

You may have heard that Robert Zemeckis is back into live action with a Denzel Washington topped 2D thriller in FLIGHT. So what's next on his plate?

Back to 3D! Zemeckis is casting Tom Hanks (or is Hanks casting Zemeckis as director?) in the Universal distributed MAJOR MATT MASON (which we covered back in June), an adaptation of the children's classic 1960's action figure. Remember SPEED? Yes that now classic "movie on a bus" starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock - was written by Canadian Graham Yost (who's father, Elwy Yost is very well known in Ontario - actually sent Graham to school late once with a note saying: "Graham is late for school because I had him stay up late to watch Citizen Kane."). Needless to say, the passion of movies was inherited. Graham Yost has co-written MAJOR MATT MASON with Tom Hanks and I expect nothing short of a STELLAR story from this tandem.

Here's Graham Yost on what to expect:
“The story is set on the moon, near future, and it’s a team of people on a base on the moon, on the south pole of the moon. And of course everything goes wrong. There’s no bad guys. There’s no aliens. Nothing like that. It’s just, can you survive? It’s really fun, and it’s just been a blast working with Tom on that. We had such a good time on ‘From Earth to the Moon’ that it’s sort of like, ‘We’ve got to go back to the moon. Some way, somehow, let’s go back to the moon.’”

“Who knows what’s going to happen with [timing], because Tom is very busy now acting in a bunch of things. I think he’s doing ‘Cloud Atlas‘ now over in Europe, [and then] I think probably going into the Maersk Alabama thing (Somalian pirate drama ‘Captain Phillips,’ directed by Paul Greengrass). So we’ll see if it happens. I hope it does, because we both love lunar exploration.”

I love that this is going to be a realistic survival thriller. No aliens. Just the lunar elements. And the Tom Hanks - Robert Zemeckis chemistry? Who can argue with that? FORREST GUMP? CAST AWAY? Simply amazing movies. Throw in 3D which Zemeckis knows like the back of his hand and we have a truly event worthy movie to look forward to.

IRON MAN 3 And THOR: THE DARK WORLD Have Been Confirmed To Be In 3D - Also ANT-MAN Coming In 2015!

Interestingly enough, CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER (April 4, 2014) has not yet been confirmed by Disney as being in 3D - but I'm 99% sure it will be. Same goes for ANT-MAN which should also go with the extra dimension.

Speaking of ANT-MAN, it has received its release date too - namely November 6, 2015. Plenty o' time for Marvel to weave their magic once again on this beloved comic.

We do have official confirmation that IRON MAN 3 (May 3, 2013) and THOR: THE DARK WORLD (November 8, 2013) will both be in 3D - and by that I am safely assuming converted 3D. Hopefully the same conversion house, budget and time allotments are in place once again to repeat the fine examples of converted 3D that was bestowed upon us for THE AVENGERS, CAPTAIN AMERICA and THOR.

Also officially announced is GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY with a August 1, 2014 release date. Pixar and Disney Animation both have unnamed projects booked with November 25, 2015 and November 7, 2014 respectively.

Personally I can't wait to see IRON MAN 3 in 3D! it works soooo well. Seeing Stark blasting about in THE AVENGERS cried out for more.

New Poster For SILENT HILL: REVELATION 3D

Check out the new poster for SILENT HILL: REVELATION 3D. I have high hopes for this movie and I suppose the story could go either way so fingers crossed. Of all the movie adaptations of video games out there, this one was the one that held the most promise for me. The first 2D movie delivered two solid first acts but more or less failed for me in the third, so I'm anxious to see the results of this one.

The great news is the cast and of course native 3D! We have Sean Bean, Carrie-Anne Moss, Radha Mitchell, Adelaide Clemens and Kit Harington headlining this thing and the very talented and industry leading 3D camera rigs of 3ality Techica (THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, THE GREAT GATSBY, PROMETHEUS, TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D to name a few). I'm so amped about entering into Silent Hill again.

Here's the storyline for the movie:
Heather Mason (Adelaide Clemens) and her father (Sean Bean) have been on the run, always one step ahead of dangerous forces that she doesn’t fully understand. Now on the eve of her 18th birthday, plagued by horrific nightmares and the disappearance of her father, Heather discovers she’s not who she thinks she is. The revelation leads her deeper into a demonic world that threatens to trap her forever.

SILENT HILL: REVELATION 3D ratchets up the tension once again on October 26.

MUST SEE: New Animated Poster From DWA's RISE OF THE GUARDIANS!

Very cool poster here guys. Like I said before, RISE OF THE GUARDIANS is set to explode. Young kids and the young-at-heart will all be clamoring for this thing! That includes me.

The movie features the voices of Hugh Jackman, Alec Baldwin, Chris Pine, Isla Fisher and Jude Law.

Here's the storyline for the movie:
RISE OF THE GUARDIANS is an epic and magical adventure that tells the story of Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, the Sandman, and Jack Frost – legendary characters with previously unknown extraordinary abilities. When an evil spirit known as Pitch lays down the gauntlet to take over the world, the immortal Guardians must join forces to protect the hopes, beliefs and imagination of children everywhere.

RISE OF THE GUARDIANS opens on November 21. More details here.

Marvel's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY To Focus On Star-Lord, Gamora And Drax The Destroyer?

If you're like me and you're a die-hard Marvel fan, then you've probably been wondering about how they are going to tackle GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. Compared to the other top line Marvel properties GOTG don't get much press so there will be a massive education going on here for the masses.

So it seems that the Marvel brain-trust have teed up 3 of the 5 Guardians to be more fully fleshed out in the first iteration of a hopeful series. According to Latino Review, those 3 characters are Star-Lord, Gamora, and Drax the Destroyer. Therefore it seems that Groot (the awesome looking tree dude) and Rocket Raccoon (the ahhh, raccoon), are going to be still present but just not driving James Gunn's plot as much. Think Black Widow and Hawkeye in THE AVENGERS.

Don't forget that Latino Review has a fairly solid background in breaking Marvel news so it's a pretty good bet that this rumor is solid.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY opens on August 1, 2014. Click here for all of our GOTG coverage.

New TV Spot For Dreamworks Animation's RISE OF THE GUARDIANS

Don't ever underestimate the power of the combined forces of our childhood holiday heroes! This movie is going to be a MASSIVE hit for many reasons - but let's face it, having Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, the Sandman and Jack Frost teaming up to fight evil is amazing fodder for a family movie.

But it seems Dreamworks Animation has nailed a great story here too. And their animation is hitting higher and higher levels of accomplishment. I truly think that RISE OF THE GUARDIANS will be a singular defining moment in the studio's life.

For all of our coverage on RISE OF THE GUARDIANS, click here.

Lionsgate presents a Millennium Films production and Main Line Pictures production.

    Here's the movie's official storyline:
Lionsgate’s TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D continues the legendary story of the homicidal Sawyer family, picking up where Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic left off in Newt, Texas, where for decades people went missing without a trace. The townspeople long suspected the Sawyer family, owners of a local barbeque pit, were somehow responsible. Their suspicions were finally confirmed one hot summer day when a young woman escaped the Sawyer house following the brutal murders of her four friends. Word around the small town quickly spread, and a vigilante mob of enraged locals surrounded the Sawyer stronghold, burning it to the ground and killing every last member of the family – or so they thought.

Decades later and hundreds of miles away from the original massacre, a young woman named Heather learns that she has inherited a Texas estate from a grandmother she never knew she had. After embarking on a road trip with friends to uncover her roots, she finds she is the sole owner of a lavish, isolated Victorian mansion. But her newfound wealth comes at a price as she stumbles upon a horror that awaits her in the mansion’s dank cellars.

TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D opens on January 4, 2013 and is a native 3D production utilizing 3ality Technica 3D camera rigs and expertise. Apparently there is converted 3D footage from the original Tobe Hooper 1974 classic in it. Can't wait for this one!

Emily Blunt Or Ruth Wilson As Ms. Marvel In THE AVENGERS 2?

It's an interesting rumor to say the least. Marvel's been wanting to bring in Ms. Marvel amongst other properties for some time now and it seems they may be acting on it. You may know for example that Ms. Marvel is a key component of Marvel's "New Avengers".

Here's how Wikipedia describes Ms. Marvel:
Ms. Marvel is the name of a fictional character appearing in comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer Roy Thomas and designed by artist Gene Colan, the non-powered Major Carol Danvers debuted as a member of the United States Air Force in Marvel Super-Heroes #13 (March 1968) and as Ms. Marvel—a fusion of alien Kree and human genes—in Ms. Marvel #1 (January 1977).

Debuting in the Silver Age of comics, the character featured in a self-titled series in the late 1970s before becoming associated with superhero teams the Avengers and the X-Men. The character has also been known as Binary, Warbird, and Captain Marvel at various points in her history, and has featured in other Marvel-endorsed products including video games, animated television series, and merchandise such as trading cards. In the 2000s, the increased use of her as a character eventually prompted some commentators to note that "she's now the House of Ideas' premier heroine." She was ranked 29th in Comics Buyer's Guide's "100 Sexiest Women in Comics" list.

According to The Daily Mail, Emily Blunt and Ruth Wilson are pulling out the stilettos and facing off for the coveted role which will be featured in Joss Whedon's followup to the number three movie of all time THE AVENGERS, known affectionately now as THE AVENGERS 2.

I don't blame these actors to be going after this role - these really are event movies. Personally I see Emily Blunt as much more of a fit than Ruth Wilson, but Blunt may already be a bit too famous to take it on. Interesting casting dilemma.

The image and video of Ms. Marvel are from Sideshow Collectibles lineup of figures of which I am an avid collector (I don't have this piece though).

What do you think? Emily Blunt or Ruth Wilson?

Special 3D Double Feature Event In Los Angeles: Watch INFERNO 3D And DARK COUNTRY With Thomas Jane

I'm friends with actors Thomas Jane and Ron Perlman as well as writer Tab Murphy so of course when I heard about this screening of DARK COUNTRY I wanted to publicize it right away. TJ has been instrumental in his participation and passion for modern 3D and I'm very grateful for his contributions. If you're a fan of Jane's too, be sure to drop by and check these movies out and meet the man himself. Details below. You will love DARK COUNTRY.

A screening of classic and contemporary “Desert Noir 3D” films, INFERNO 3D (1953) and DARK COUNTRY 3D (2009), sponsored by the LA3D Club, will take place at the Downtown Independent Theater on Sunday October 28 at 7pm. On hand to introduce the films will be the “Czar of Noir,” Eddie Muller, founder of the Film Noir Foundation, and Thomas Jane, director and star of Dark Country 3D. Jane will also be doing a book signing at 5pm at the theater for his new graphic novel publication of Dark Country, with art by Thomas Ott.

Inferno 3D is the only 1950s 3D film produced by 20th Century Fox studio. Presented here for the first time in a brand new digital restoration by film historian Daniel Symmes, Inferno makes striking use of 3D in telling the tale of a treacherous wife (Rhonda Fleming) who leaves her millionaire husband (Robert Ryan) in the Mojave Desert to die.

Dark Country, released by Sony Pictures/Stage Six in 2009, is a 3D horror/noir thriller starring Thomas Jane, Lauren German and Ron “Hellboy” Perlman. About Dark Country 3D, Muller has written that “the movie is a delirious dream of the dark pulpy stuff we loved as kids—and always will.” The evening of this big Desert Noir 3D double bill will also feature a display of historic 1950s 3D promotional materials in the lobby of the Downtown Independent Theater and a question and answer period between Muller and Jane before the screening of Dark Country 3D.

Four New Banners For THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY

The images we're seeing from the first installment of The Hobbit are mesmerizing! And Peter Jackson's band continues to play on with four more banners on parade. And, to no surprise, I love them. Each reveals an important segment of the first movie THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY and revels in their respective color schemes. I'll have some more please.

Here's the storyline for the movie:
Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities… A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY opens on December 14th.

A quick note introducing Karl van Allen to the Phobia Films team! We're excited about delivering top entertainment to the masses, including DREADLOCK.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Phobia Films Appoints Karl van Allen To Script Consultant & Writer As Well As Script Supervisor On DREADLOCK.

DARTMOUTH, Nova Scotia OCTOBER 4, 2012) - Phobia Films announced today that Karl van Allen will be assuming the in-house role of Script Consultant and Writer. Further, Mr. van Allen will also be assuming the role of Script Supervisor for Phobia Films latest movie production, DREADLOCK.

Mr. van Allen is an established and successful Writer and Editor (contributing writer with Todd Langseth for STINGY JACK).

Karl joins the team at Phobia Films owned by Jim Dorey. Mr. Dorey is also the Writer, Director and a Producer on DREADLOCK as well as Editor-in-Chief of the world's premier 3D movie news site MarketSaw.com. Phobia Films currently has six scripts in development with one in pre-production.

"I can't wait to roll up our sleeves and polish off the next development project," said Mr. van Allen. "And the fact that we have Nova Scotia as a backdrop for many of our stories is huge. Our locations will be just like another character in our story - if you've been to Nova Scotia, you know what I mean."

Continues van Allen: "Jim and I seem to always ignite ideas. We've got six so far in development. Being Script Supervisor on DREADLOCK will be an amazing experience too - you really are all in for a treat."

"I've read and experienced Karl's work firsthand and without hesitation I knew he was an excellent fit for Phobia Films," Mr. Dorey states. "It really is quite magical. When we sit down to brainstorm, lighting strikes fast - all we have to do is listen for the thunder and take notes on EVERYTHING. I tend to be more of an idea guy, but I'm writing quite a bit these days especially DREADLOCK. Karl specializes in characters and dialogue not to mention solid editing, but more importantly to me is that we are a culmultative creative force and not vilipend to the process whatsoever."

DREADLOCK is a character driven, horror / thriller solidly based in fact and science. Suspension of disbelief will be among our top priorities. When we decide to scare you, be prepared to apologize to the person beside you. We specialize in eliciting primal screams. DREADLOCK is slated to start shooting in the summer of 2013. The horror / thriller redefines the genre by fully utilizing a character driven story to ensure the audience truly cares and the movie truly scares. The movie will be distributed in both 2D and 3D. A decision on shooting native 3D or a post conversion will be made in the coming months.

Phobia Films was founded by Jim Dorey in 2012 as a Thriller / Horror / Action genre entertainment production company with a special love of stereoscopic 3D. Phobia Films is headquartered in the fast growing film production city of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

MUST WATCH: JJ Abrams Debuts First Clip From STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS

Ok, keep in mind this was aired on Conan. Be very aware of that. However it is true that the first clip from JJ Abrams' STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS was shown.

There's a fairly good reason why we are seeing this particular scene from the movie as opposed to others. Back in April we were privy to some spy shots, one of which was of Zachary Quinto (Spock) hanging in front of a green screen wearing a suit to protect him from a volcano. This clip is from that scene.

Here's the description of the scene:
"Zachary Quinto as Spock filming an action scene for the Untitled Star Trek 2 Sequel. After first rehearsing the scene with a Spock Stunt Double Actor Zachary Quinto was then rigged to a wire in front of a large green screen and lifted to a height of 10 stories high then dropped at a high rate of speed as if he was falling. In the scene Spock is wearing a "Volcano Suit" and carrying an unknown piece of equipment with the Starfleet Emblem. A Volcano is somehow involved in this scene. The crew had a real fire burning off camera to catch the fire reflections on Spock's 'Volcano Suit'."

There are comedic caveats involved of course. But I'll let you watch it and decide what you make of it:

Hahaa! Ok, so it's only 3 frames long, but the screen cap shown above does show you Spock's profile wearing a helmet and suit in front of raging flames. Can there be any doubt he is great peril? Give us more JJ!

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS opens May 17, 2013. For all of our STAR TREK 2 coverage, click here.

Exclusive Shots From Space Shuttle Endeavor's Final Landing At LAX, Shot In 3D!

The California Science Center, NASA, United Airlines, and a host of volunteers donated their services and products to ensure the Space Shuttle Endeavor’s final landing at LAX was memorialized and celebrated. "Endeavor Comes Home" producer, David Knight, Ted Kenney, 3D producer, and director Haley Jackson led the production portion of the landing. 3ality Technica and the Society of Camera Operators (SOC) captured every second from the moment the Endeavor began its ascent to its welcoming party. The Endeavor will make its final home at the California Science Center in the coming weeks, which will involve being towed across Los Angeles to Exposition Park. 3ality Technica will be there to capture the move, along with SOC members shooting in 2D, and the content will be banked for future use by the California Science Center and other partners.

Interested in seeing a collection of time lapse images of the event? Check out this cool video from the LA Times.

I'm so glad that this event was captured for the history archives in 3D. Imagine being a young student and being able to see a Saturn V rocket launch for the moon in 3D! We want to ensure future generations can appreciate what happened and be as close to the action as possible. Studies have shown that students learning in 3D can better concentrate and retain more knowledge too (for an example), so why not include history in the making?

A big thank you for all those involved in the capture of this moment for future generations in 3D. It's appreciated!

Expect Extended Edition 3D Blu-Rays Of THE HOBBIT

Tim here with a "I could have told you this was coming." Reported out of theonering.net it turns out that three movies aren't enough to satisfy all the footage for The Hobbit. We're looking at Extended Editions of each as well, just as it was with The Lord of the Rings. No complaints because Extended Editions means more enjoyment for fans... and a push for 3DTV's and the 3D Blu-Rays!

Just like the LOTR DVDs the theatrical cuts will hit the DVD, Blu-Ray, and Digital Copy market first, followed by the Extended Editions a few months later. Expect the 3D Blu-Ray to also have the Extended Scenes in 3D. This will give more people incentive to purchase a 3DTV so that they can enjoy the Extended Editions as they were meant to be seen. However, will the digital copies also be 3D? It's not a hard leap for the iTunes digital copies to be available in 3D as through an AppleTV one can easily play a side-by-side squeeze on a 3DTV and have it interpreted as 3D. All Apple has to do is enable 3D in the iTunes Store. That's wishful thinking at this time. The Blu-Rays are guaranteed to be 3D at least.

Here's the storyline for THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY:
THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY follows title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Must Watch: New Trailer For Dreamworks Animation's THE CROODS

I've been waiting for this one! This first trailer for Dreamworks Animation's THE CROODS opens the door to what I think could be the dawning of a new era for DWA. I've known all along about the plot that an caveman outsider with "new technology" enters into the Crood's family unit and disturbs the so called peace (a comedic idea developed by John Cleese?), but with this trailer we're seeing an entirely new dynamic open up about the family's daughter who is so anxious to explore. What I'm seeing here is some storytelling magic from DWA, expanding on an already great idea with some new arcs about living life to the fullest with the energy and bravado of youth.

Will it pay off for the Croods? How does Ryan Reynold's outsider character play out? Questions to be answered soon. In the meantime, enjoy the first trailer! Joining Reynolds is Nicholas Cage and Emma Stone along with Cloris Leachman, Clark Duke and Catherine Keener.

Here's the storyline for the movie:
The Croods is being written and directed by two-time Academy Award nominee Chris Sanders (HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON, LILO AND STITCH) and Kirk DeMicco (SPACE CHIMPS) and produced by Kristine Belson (HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON) and Jane Hartwell (SHREK). It stars Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, Catherine Keener, Clark Duke and Cloris Leachman. The Croods is a comedy adventure that takes us back to a previously undiscovered era in the history of our planet known as the Croodaceous, when nature was still a work-in-progress… full of never-before- seen creatures and landscapes. Audiences will relate to the hilarious family antics as an imaginative and resourceful newcomer helps the Croods navigate their way through the fantastic world beyond their cave.

THE CROODS opens on March 22, 2013. For all of our Croods coverage, click here.
