Hey North America: STALINGRAD Is In IMAX 3D Starting Tomorrow!

Here's your only opportunity to see the highest grossing Russian movie of all time on big screen and what better way then IMAX 3D!

I'm definitely going to check this thing out as I have only had a few scenes graciously made available to me while I was entertained at 3ality Technica's headquarters last year (they provided their 3D rigs, expertise and Steve Schlair is 3D Producer on the project). The trailer and visual fx look amazing! What I saw was just enough for me to be thrilled to hear that we're getting it in IMAX. I'm very interested in WWII's European Theater as well.

Whether you're a veteran, WWII historian or just someone who enjoys solid action, especially based in fact, then you'll love STALINGRAD.

Here's the storyline for the movie:
Written by Ilya Tilkin and Sergey Snezhkin and directed by Fedor Bondarchuk, STALINGRAD is set in 1942, when invading German troops were in control of the Volga River. A group of Soviet soldiers finds a young woman trapped behind enemy lines and works to protect her. Thomas Kretschmann and Yanina Studilina star.

So check the movie out! It's your one opportunity in North America. See you there!

STALINGRAD opens tomorrow in IMAX 3D.

Must Watch: New GODZILLA Trailer !

Wow - looking VERY good! Love the shot of Godzilla's head as the doors are being closed. Just what kind of creatures is Godzilla fighting? The premise of the Pacific nuclear tests actually being attacks against creatures is very interesting - great way to bring in suspension of disbelief.

It's a full trailer and I'm LOVIN' it! Have a look...

Here's the movie's storyline:
An epic rebirth to Toho's iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure, from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, pits the world's most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity's scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.

Gareth Edwards directs "Godzilla," which stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson ("Kick-Ass"), Oscar® nominee Ken Watanabe ("The Last Samurai," "Inception"), Elizabeth Olsen ("Martha Marcy May Marlene"), Oscar® winner Juliette Binoche ("The English Patient," "Cosmopolis"), and Sally Hawkins ("Blue Jasmine"), with Oscar® nominee David Strathairn ("Good Night, and Good Luck.," "The Bourne Legacy") and Bryan Cranston ("Argo," TV's "Breaking Bad").

GODZILLA in 3D opens on May 16.

EXCLUSIVE: Source Update On AVATAR Sequels ! Something More Valuable Than Unobtainium !! More Worlds!

Ok guys - here's the latest on James Cameron's upcoming AVATAR 2 (nothing concrete yet on the others)! You know MarketSaw is best known for it's AVATAR and STAR WARS coverage, well we're continuing in that tradition today. First the STAR WARS update, and now AVATAR.

Pandora awaits, so let's dive into it (pun intended):

My source is in italics:
"The Avatar universe is progressing through various changes and stages. It's going to be the most ambitious post ever attempted. As I told you many years ago Stephen Lang is going to assume his iconic role again. In more ways than one next time out."
- Probably the most ambitious due to a combination of Cameron's scale and pushing the limits of his team and the effort it will take in post-production to handle 4K 3D in 48 or 60 frames per second!

"Suites are being upgraded to allow for a quicker post workflow, allowing the elements captured to be integrated into architecture in a less cumbersome load out, and allowing for more dexterity to be captured in real-time."
- Cameron's performance capture volume is going to be a thing of beauty! Would love to see shooting in action.

"There are going to be many battles, both above and below Pandora. Other solar bodies in the system will be explored too and will have interesting inter-connectivity. Big ideas, epic in scope, hard science, and the future military getting the green light to teach those naughty natives a lesson, only to stumble onto something far more valuable than unobtainium. It's going to be 'big' in all senses of the word, and that's just 2."
- Hello. Something more valuable than Unobtainium ($20 million a kilo)! What physical properties will THAT have? What fantastic environment will that create for us to explore? I love the hard science Cameron puts into his stories too. Of particular note here is the inter-connectivity between worlds! So an extension of Eywa? Something more sinister or a greater defense possibility against humans? A lot of questions. "Big" in quotes? Perhaps larger fauna for humans to deal with...

More when I get it! AVATAR 2 is slated for a December 2016 release.

EXCLUSIVE: Source Update On STAR WARS EPISODE VII ! Casting, The Twins And TWO More Indys !!

Here's the latest and greatest about the state of affairs regarding STAR WARS: EPISODE VII ! This all comes from my top STAR WARS source - the one who gave us the news that Lucas was planing a third trilogy in 3D (back in 2009), and that Lucas would not be directing. Quite frankly, I think he's been the top STAR WARS source for advance news for at least the past 5 years.

Here's what my source had to say about some of who will wind up being cast:
"Ian McDiarmid, Harrison Ford (our exclusive story), Carrie Fisher (our exclusive story), Mark Hamill (our exclusive story), Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels, Warwick Davies, Benedict Cumberbatch and Gary Oldman. I believe Cumberbatch and Oldman were pursued for the same role, but I don't know how that will work out with the script changes, but I'm told they are both involved."
- So yeah, Cumberbatch and Oldman too potentially. Awesome casting if all goes well.

"Regarding Harrison Ford, two more Indiana Jones features are in the negotiation stages as per Ford's contract clause on Star Wars, which is the primary reason he didn't 'publicly' or 'privately' commit, or so I'm told."
- There you go guys - TWO more Indiana Jones movies being planned, not just one. I'll try to get more info on this asap.

"Many Star Wars pre-production issues, an 'inadequate' central story which nobody would stamp off on, a problematic initial release date and an 'indecisive' director (J.J. Abrams) with the hardest gig in the industry. It's not going to be a cakewalk, but it will be a product shipping with the majority of its original parts."
- Confirmation of the current state of things.

"Ultimately it's about twins, and which will take a path towards darkness and which will follow in their fathers footsteps, or at least that is what it used to be, that may come later as I think changes are being undertaken to bring the original cast into the forefront of the story leading to ramifications that lead up to the next generation of Skywalkers."
- So we could be seeing an evolution of the story with the availability and willingness of the original cast plus the fact the Abrams is notorious for changing dogma (*ahem* STAR TREK). When Lucas handed Disney the keys to STAR WARS I believe that dogma was intact but now it seems changes may be afoot. We'll see. In the meantime, MarketSaw will continue to be your best site for advance news on the STAR WARS sequels. I have 100% confidence in this source. If he says it's happening, it is happening. Right now. Of course things could change especially with JJ at the helm, but as of this very second - this news is up to date.

More when I get it! And thanks again - you know who you are :-) Click here for all of our Star Wars coverage over the years.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII is slated for release on December 18, 2015.

WETA Digital: Bringing Smaug to Life

Tim here, WETA Digital has released a brand new two and a half minute video exclusively the The Hollywood Reporter detailing the creation of the dragon Smaug. Video is embedded below. Enjoy!

The Hollywood Reporter also spoke to Smaug VFX artist David Clayton (who is nominated for an Academy Award for his work on the film) about the process of translating actor Benedict Cumberbatch's motion capture performance into the fire-breathing creature you see on the screen in The Desolation of Smaug.

David Clayton: (emphaisis mine)

"The translation of performance from Benedict to Smaug wasn't a one-to-one match like you'd get from a humanoid creature. They have very different physiologies," Clayton explains. "As animators we had to transpose the elements of Benedict's performance that were critical to the shot, such as head nuances and facial expressions. We then built up the majority of his motion with keyframe animation" –meaning that it was animated by hand.

Look out on April 8th when The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits sheleves on DVD, Blu-Ray, and 3D Blu-Ray.

New Poster of GODZILLA Dwarfing The San Francisco Skyline

I'm really loving the new poster from Legendary Pictures' GODZILLA. Talk about massive! Look at the size of him beside the Transamerica building in San Francisco (850' tall). So that makes him what, 1400-1500' tall?

And he comes to us courtesy of an exciting new filmmaker who knows enough about huge monsters to be dangerous. Gareth Edwards (MONSTERS) accepted the challenge and I expect him to hand us a lovingly crafted, thrilling, edge of your seat monster movie. Anything less just wouldn't be Gareth Edwards.

The movie stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, Kan Watanabe and Juliette Binoche.

GODZILLA in 3D opens on May 16. More info when we get it!

Yes! Finally Here: First Trailer For Marvel's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY !!

PERFECT. I can't imagine a better first look at this production! I'm floored. Simply perfection.

The GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY trailer aired during Jimmy Kimmel and as soon as it appeared here on their YouTube channel I must have watched it 5 times. Anyway - what are you waiting for? Pan down and get the trailer!

Here's the movie's storyline:
From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team--the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits--Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon; Groot, a tree-like humanoid; the deadly and enigmatic Gamora; and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand--with the galaxy's fate in the balance.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, which first appeared in comic books in MARVEL SUPER-HEROES #18 (Jan. 1969), stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, featuring Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Nova Prime Rael and Benicio del Toro as The Collector.

James Gunn is the director of the film with Kevin Feige producing, and Louis D'Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Jeremy Latcham, Alan Fine and Stan Lee serve as executive producers. The story is by Nicole Perlman and James Gunn, with screenplay by James Gunn.

Marvel's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY releases in U.S. theaters on August 1, 2014.

3D Geek Alert: Poppy 3D for iPhone!

Tim here: And it's here! Turn your iPhone into a 3D camera! Tim here, and one of my cousins forwarded me a link to this nifty new toy for your iPhone. I haven't gotten a chance to test it out yet, but I'm mighty curious!
From Poppy's Website (emphasis mine):

Poppy lets you capture beautiful images and videos in 3D using your iPhone's camera. Viewing through Poppy is immersive. It feels like loking into another world. It's a whole new way to capture and share your own experiences. Most of all, it's a lot of fun.
They even have a neat little video, which I've embeded below, of real world people testing it out. It's more than just a camera as it also allows you to view Stereoscopic 3D content playing through your iPhone. This will be great for the kids on those long car trips, when flying commercially, or just lounging aroudn the home. Check out the video!

How does it work?

  • Just put your iPhone in and begin capturing 3D video and pictures. Immediately view in 3D, or share and browse 3D from around the world.
  • Poppy uses mirrors to capture two stereographic images using your iPhone's single camera.
  • When you look in the viewfinder, Poppy's lenses combine the two images into a single 3D view.

  • It's available for $59.95 (USD), which is a bit pricy if you were to buy a set of four for a family. However, considering what most people pay for their iPhone's it's only a fraction of the cost of the phone for one.

I look forward to getting my hands on one of these to test it out. Especially for being able to watch Stereoscopic 3D content on my iPhone. Get more information and order yours on their official website: poppy3d.com

Two New Featurettes For THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

Ok watch it here guys. There are spoilers in these - like the relationship issues that Peter and Gwen go through and Stan Lee's cameo appearance too. So be warned!

I really like the eco-friendly nature of this production! Hopefully this becomes the model for other productions and studios to follow. Hats off to Sony for this!

Here's the storyline for the movie:
We've always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.
It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 opens on May 2.

Cameron: AVATAR Will Be Shooting In 4K With Potential Variable Framerate !

Just heard from one of my French readers (Thanks Chris!) and he sent me a very cool interview James Cameron completed recently. Here are some of the key takeaways:

    - Still in creative pre-production; going to be spectacular.
    - New worlds, new habitats, new cultures.
    - Still Humans (dominating nature) vs. Navi (integrating into nature), but with new manifestations.
    - Working with Weta Digital to create a whole new suite of tools to speed up production.
    - Considering shooting whole movie in high framerate -or- variable framerate (only the parts of the movie that make sense to be in HFR).
    - Shooting at a native resolution of 4K.

I'm also on the trail of something very interesting about the sequels and I'll have that story up when I get it vetted. Very cool about the AVATAR sequels in 4K and I would wager that he'll opt for variable frame rate. More when I get it!

Avatar 2 is slated for release in December 2016, with the remaining two coming each year after that.

Details Of DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Revealed By Gary Oldman!

Ok so if you're a fan of the franchise then you may want to not read the following information that may or may not be revealed in subsequent trailers. One would assume that it may, but it may not as well so if you want a pristine viewing of DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES in July, keep that in mind.

Can't wait to see this native 3D production (3ality Technica rigs) see light in my local theater!

    WARNING SPOILERS:

Gary Oldman gave some details on his character and the story around him in DOTPOTA which takes place 10 years after RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES.

    Gary Oldman:
"He's (Oldman's character) the sort of designated leader if you will of this community of those who were lucky enough to survive the flu, the disease and ensuing social uprising from it - so they're sort of survivors... and he was a police officer, so he's more of the kind of elected leader. And they need power and there's a power station and some of my people go out and see if it's operational, if it's still out there, and then they discover that there's a whole community of apes living there. We believed that they were all completely fire-bottomed and wiped out.

(Oldman's character) experienced great loss, personally and there's only one answer for him and that's to wipe them out. I see him as sort of the hero of the piece.

(Director Matt Reeves) was more interested in not just keeping the franchise alive but he wanted to make it more of a human story; he wanted to explore what had happened and keep it more focused on the human side of it before the story becomes the PLANET OF THE APES as we know it from the original."

More info when we get it! DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES opens on July 11.

Fancy Yourself A Writer? Like GI Joe? Then Check This Out !

If you haven't heard about Kindle Worlds yet and you're a writer, it's time you did.

Here's how it works: Kindle Worlds is a publication submission platform where you choose a licensed World, read the Content Guidelines for that World, write your story, upload that story, create a cover using free images or your own image, and accept a publishing contract with Amazon Publishing. It’s simple and it’s fast. Every Kindle Worlds story will be featured on Amazon.com and Kindle devices and apps.

But here's the kicker: Amazon just came to an agreement with Hasbro for the G.I. Joe universe!

Amazon and Hasbro shaking hands on this allows writers to publish their own fiction and earn royalties using established characters such as Snake Eyes, Cobra Commander and Zartan.

Amazon is throwing serious licensing fees at intellectual property owners to allow this to take place. GI Joe? Veronica Mars? Harbinger? Gossip Girl? The Vampire Diaries? Ravenswood? Something for almost everyone.

I'm most interested in G.I. Joe myself. Might even give it a go! I love the Snake Eyes character. I'd have to get deeper into the lore but I really enjoy the movies, especially the last one (G.I. JOE: RETALIATION) in 3D.

Darren Aronofsky's NOAH Goes 3D, But Wait...

Yes, Darren Aronofsky's NOAH is going 3D but only for select overseas markets! I had to double take that myself. Why on earth would you limit your major markets 3D box office by only releasing in flat? Paramount has already invested ($10m+) in doing the conversion obviously so what gives? They are releasing it in 3D in 65 markets, but NOT the US (includes Canada), UK, Australia and France.

It's about as ridiculous as releasing only in mono for North America - the rest of the world gets stereo. Who made this decision at Paramount? Someone on the precipice, that's who.

I'm scratching my head but this certainly does underscore one thing: The overseas markets are having more and more impact on Hollywood decisions and this is just the beginning. Wait until China's box office climbs to where it is destined to be.

From THR:  "About the decision to opt for the 3D version, an insider cites the worldwide performance of Fox’s LIFE OF PI, which grossed $125 million domestically and $484 million abroad."

    Here's the movie's storyline:
NOAH is a close adaptation of the Biblical story of Noah’s Ark. In a world ravaged by human sin, Noah is given a divine mission: to build an Ark to save creation from the coming flood.

NOAH opens in North America on March 28.

Here's The Latest TV Spot And Two Clips for POMPEII 3D !

Paul W.S. Anderson's POMPEII latest TV spot and clips treats us to some new shots from the movie which looks very promising. I expect a thrilling ride through the faithfully reproduced Italian city and era. Think THE THREE MUSKETEERS (Anderson's adventure set in France) meets TITANIC - cause we all know what happens when you live beside a massive erupting volcano. The effects look EXCELLENT. Yeah, it's a romance too.

Kit Harington, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Kiefer Sutherland and Carrie-Anne Moss star.

Here's the storyline for the movie:
The film follows an enslaved Celtic gladiator (Milo) who falls in love with a noblewoman on the eve of a massive volcanic eruption that destroys Pompeii, an event that also brings him face-to-face with the man who slaughtered his family years earlier.

POMPEII in 3D opens on February 21.
